Language group - Kunibidji

David Wurridjal Jones (DJ) is a prominent Senior Traditional Owner of Maningrida. A leader of the Dukurrdji Clan, he is a founding member and current Chairperson of Nja-marléya. DJ convened its very first meeting when it was known as the Council of Elders, a volunteer group of community leaders coming together to resolve community issues, playing a critical role in shaping its purpose and direction.

DJ champions the role of tradition, law and knowledge in justice, leadership and community empowerment. He led the formalisation of Maningrida’s landmark Local Decision Making (LDM) Agreement, ensuring that community voices, cultural governance and local priorities are central to decision-making processes that affect the region.

DJ leads with courage and integrity, role-modelling strong leadership grounded in culture. He is widely regarded for his work in peace-keeping within the community and for guiding strategic pathways that support a stronger future for young people, built on cultural knowledge and identity. A passionate mentor, DJ is dedicated to creating opportunities for emerging leaders, supporting the next generation to step up and lead with confidence.

Highly respected by community members, government and non-government organisations alike, DJ holds a strong vision for genuine community control. He is actively involved in ensuring Maningrida’s future is shaped by the people who live there, while recognising the cultural strength and unity of the many language groups from east, west, north and south who call the community home.
